About this book
Creators: Herodotus (481? BCE-421? BCE) and G. C. Macaulay (1852-1915) [Translator] "The History of Herodotus — Volume 1" by Herodotus is a work written in the 5th century BC. Considered the founding work of history in Western literature, it chronicles the rise of the Persian Empire and the causes of the Greco-Persian Wars. Herodotus frames the conflict as a battle between slavery and freedom, weaving together accounts of rulers, oracles, conquest, and cultural customs. Through travels and interviews across the ancient world, he preserves the remarkable achievements of both Greeks and non-Greeks before time erases them. (This is an automatically generated summary.)
